For the past two years, California has been gripped in a historic drought, but things took a turn for the worse last month when measurements indicated 20% below normal precipitation levels and the worst drought conditions since record keeping began in the 1840’s. Governor Jerry Brown has declared a Statewide Drought Emergency and asked all 38 million California residents to reduce water use by 20%. Even President Obama has traveled to the state, offering Federal aid to those adversely affected by the drought. However, conservation may not be enough to ensure that there will be enough water in California to meet the demands of its population and industries in the long term. California produces a third of the country’s vegetables and agriculture accounts for 80% of the state’s water use. As California’s population continues to grow, and climate change threatens the state’s largest source of water, the annual snowpack on the Sierra Nevada, it falls to water technologies to help bridge

The existence of suspended solids and colloidal materials in feed water pose one of the biggest problems in reverse osmosis systems. To help combat this issue, Sterlitech is adding new simpleSDI kits to supplement its existing line of automatic and manual silt density index testing kits from GE. The new kits are available in automatic and manual testing versions and utilize 47 mm diameter, 0.45 micron MCE membranes to measure the degree of potential fouling in an RO system. To view Sterlitech's entire line of SDI kits as well as supplementary information about SDI testing, click here.

The closest most people get to using a membrane filter happens when they slide a paper filter into a coffee machine each day for their morning brew. That realization gave us a great idea for a practical gift that we know many of you could use: a handsome coffee mug monogrammed with Sterlitech’s logo. From now until the end of January, with any order from the Sterlitech website or the Glass Fiber Store, you can enter the coupon code “MUG 2014” to claim a free coffee mug. However, our supply of mugs is limited, so pay us a visit and claim yours

The field of membrane technology is constantly changing and growing with new technologies to tackle new problems and introduce new capabilities. TriSep Corporation is one the companies that is leading the way with its innovations, which they discuss in the December issue of International Filtration News Magazine. In TriSep's article, they introduce three new technologies:
- A line of high-temperature elements that are capable of continuous operation and periodic sanitation.
- TurboClean® sanitary hard shell elements, which provides higher flow velocity and efficiency than traditional sanitary elements.
- The iSepTM ultrafiltration membrane, the first UF membrane that is specifically designed to the handle high-fouling water and wastewater feeds.

Sterlitech is helping researchers around the globe detect the presence of schistosome eggs, the cause of schistosomiasis, in human urine with its complete Schistosome Test kit. Over 200 million people across the world suffer from Schistosomiasis, and nearly 700 million people live in places where it is endemic. Sterlitech’s Schistosome Test Kit comes complete with everything needed to carry out fast, accurate tests in the field. “The symptoms of schistosomiasis can last for years and lead significant damage to a person’s liver, intestines or bladder,” notes Mark Spatz, president of Sterlitech Corporation. “Accurately diagnosing patients with the disease can help track the source of the infection and make prevention and treatment easier.” Schistosomiasis begins when juvenile schistosome worms burrow through the skin of human host as they come into contact with contaminated water. The immature worms travel through hosts, eventually settling in the veins near the intestines and

A few months ago, we added an article on our blog about how the pores are track-etched into our polycarbonate membrane filters. Track-etching results in uniform, cylindrical pores, the size and density of which can be tightly controlled by adjusting the polycarbonate’s exposure to charged particles and caustic etchants. As it turns out, the relatively uniform pores in a polycarbonate membrane make them an excellent substrate for the synthesis of nanowires and nanotubes. In the production of nanostructures, polycarbonate membranes are used like nano-scale muffin pans. A chemical precursor for the type of nanotube being produced is allowed to infiltrate the pores of the membrane by means of a solution or chemical vapor deposition. The nanotubes form in the pores as material aggregates onto the walls of the membrane. Finally, the polycarbonate membrane is removed or dissolved away, leaving behind nanotubes that are more uniform than those synthesized without one. Nanotubes are

Nobuto Blood Filter Strips are the latest addition to Sterlitech’s growing line of microbiology and life science products. Made from high-purity cellulose fibers, which gives them a structure ideal for uniform sampling, each strip holds approximately 0.1 mL of blood or 0.04 mL of serum. Once the blood strip has dried, researchers can analyze, store, or mail the samples without refrigeration. “Nobuto blood filter strips are a valuable resource for tracking diseases within wild animal populations,” states Mark Spatz, president of Sterlitech. “Studies have indicated that these collection devices are easy to use and enable delayed analysis when samples are collected in the field. In past studies, they have been used to track Avian Influenza and West Nile Virus in wild birds.” Sterlitech offers Nobuto blood filter strips in packs of 100 and plastic drying racks which can hold 40 of the strips at one time. In addition to screening for avian Influenza and West Nile virus, they are
