March 05, 2013After nearly ten years of legal wrangling, the Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort was given the green light to use reclaimed wastewater to make artificial snow for the first time this winter. It is also the first ski resort in the world to do so, taking its water from treatment facilities in nearby Flagstaff, AZ. It’s definitely a novel use for wastewater and, if it proves successful, it may help combat the stigma against the use of reclaimed wastewater in other applications where human contact may occur. Unfortunately, the first run of snow sprayed onto the slopes was yellow. Face-planting into a pile of yellow snow made from reclaimed wastewater is an icky proposition. Joking aside, the discolored snow raises serious questions about the potential health and environmental impact of spraying wastewater effluent onto the slopes. Some studies have shown that the effluent contains traces of pharmaceuticals, hormones and other chemicals which are not regulated by current water quality laws. The controversy

The closest most people get to using a membrane filter happens when they slide a paper filter into a coffee machine each day for their morning brew. That realization gave us a great idea for a practical gift that we know many of you could use: a handsome coffee mug monogrammed with Sterlitech’s logo. With any order from the Sterlitech website or the Glass Fiber Store, you can enter the coupon code “MUG ME” to claim a free coffee mug. However, we only have 300 of these mugs to give away, so act quickly.

Sterlitech receives another bit of local recognition this year, this time receiving the Best in Kent Award for Laboratory Furniture Manufacturing. This award was bestowed upon us by the Kent Award Program, which works to recognize small businesses in Kent which have exceptional success at generating competitive advantages and long-term value. As always, this latest feather in our cap would not have been possible without the support of all our customers. You had as much of a hand in presenting us with this reward as the Kent Award Program Commitee.

At Sterlitech Corporation, we take great pride in producing the best laboratory filtration products on the market. It’s of one of our specialties, after all. But even we have to admit that filters aren’t always the most electrifying products to talk about. Until someone decides they should be. A team of chemists led by Anthony Kucernak, from the Imperial College London, decided to do exactly that in a study to determine if they could use Sterlitech’s silver membranes as electrodes and improve the performance of alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AAEMFC). AAEMFCs are a new twist on one the oldest and well-developed fuel cell technologies: the alkaline fuel cell. Owing to their nearly 70% power efficiency, NASA chose alkaline fuel cells to provide electricity with the Apollo missions and the Space Shuttle. AAEMFCs usually have electrodes made from carbon, but the performance of carbon electrodes in the cell tends to degrade because of unwanted secondary reactions. According to the
