Applications of Nobuto Strips

Bacterial and viral outbreaks in wild animal colonies can have a devastating impact on wildlife populations, and sometimes their long term conservation too. Early diagnosis can help wildlife managers understand what pathogens they are dealing with so they can implement measures to prevent the spread of disease where possible. ‘

Nobuto blood filter strips offer an efficient, inexpensive, and portable solution for taking blood samples from wild animals, providing a valuable tool for surveying and monitoring both healthy and diseased wildlife populations. They can be used to diagnose a wide range of common bacterial and viral diseases in wildlife and birds, as well as for detecting exposure to harmful environmental pollutants such as heavy metals and toxins.

Nobuto strips have been used to test for common avian viral diseases such as avian influenza, Newcastle disease, and West Nile virus in bird colonies. They have also been used to detect pathogenic bacteria and viruses  in other wild animals, including toxoplasmosis, hantaviruses, bubonic plague, measles, and tularemia. Nobuto strips make it easy for researchers to collect blood samples directly from animals in the field, or to work closely with local hunters to collect blood from the animals they hunt. Constructed from cellulose fibers, they can hold 1 milliliter of blood or 0.04 milliliters of serum.

Once the blood sample is collected on the strip and allowed to dry, it can be stored, mailed and analyzed without the sample having to be refrigerated. This makes it an efficient and convenient solution for mailing blood samples to laboratories to test for antibodies that are used to diagnose disease. The strips can also be used to analyze blood samples of wild animals to monitor their exposure to environmental pollutants.

A study that evaluated the effectiveness of using Nobuto blood filter strips for detecting avian influenza antibodies in wildfowl found blood samples collected and dried onto Nobuto strips stored at room temperature for up to three months offered a convenient and viable alternative to preserving blood serum at -30 C. Nobuto strips therefore offer the perfect solution for collecting and storing blood samples when no refrigeration facilities are on hand.

Sterlitech offers Nobuto blood filter strips in packs of 100 and plastic filter strip drying racks that safely and conveniently hold up to 40 Nobuto strips at a time while blood samples are drying.
