Sterlitech Tips: Four Common Membrane System Challenges and How to Address Them
· Filtration Resources

While many common membrane system challenges can be resolved through careful review of system setup and operating conditions, Sterlitech’s technical team can provide additional guidance when needed. Below, we highlight four challenges operators may encounter, what can cause them, and practical steps to address them.
1. Pressure Buildup During Operation
Observation: A steady rise in pressure, particularly at the beginning of testing, may be related to membrane compaction or pump warmup. Other causes include membrane fouling, scaling, or a concentrate valve that is closed too tightly.
Recommendation: Review operating conditions and guide concentrate valve adjustments to maintain the intended operating pressure. Operators should remain near the system to monitor pressure and make adjustments as needed.
2. Unexpected Flow Rate or Pressure Transducer Readings
Observation: Readings that do not match expectations may indicate a sensor or configuration issue rather than a process problem. Trapped air in sensor lines, calibration drift, or incorrect digital panel settings can affect the displayed values.
Recommendation: Check sensor calibration and panel configurations to help identify the source of unexpected readings.
3. Wrinkled Membranes
Observation: Wrinkled membranes can cause uneven flow and unreliable test data. Inadequate use of shims and spacers can increase pressure too quickly, or cause membrane wrinkling, resulting in uneven flow and unreliable test data.
Recommendation: Sterlitech can assist with spacer selection, membrane orientation, flat installation, and gradual pressure increases during startup.
4. Cleaning Membrane Systems After Testing
Observation: Residual materials left in the system after testing can affect subsequent runs and system performance. Cleaning requirements vary based on the materials processed during testing and the system’s wetted materials.
Recommendation: Sterlitech can recommend compatible flushing and cleaning sequences, along with appropriate storage practices between runs, to help maintain system performance and extend service life.
