Proper sanitization doesn't just keep your process clean; it also protects the performance and lifespan of your capsule filters. A few simple best practices can help prevent filter damage, reduce downtime, and ensure reliable filtration.  

Before You Begin: Check Membrane Performance 

Sanitization and sterilization do not remove any particles trapped in the membrane pores. If the capsule filter exhibits increased back pressure, these procedures will not unclog the membrane pores and restore to original performance. 

The following procedures should only be used when the capsule continues to operate within the acceptable flow and pressure ranges established for the process: 

Autoclave Sterilization 

Capsule filters can be sterilized by autoclaving or with compatible chemical disinfectants. but never with hot water or in-line steam. Gamma-irradiated pre-sterilized capsules should not be autoclaved for reuse. 

Best Practices: 

  • Loosen vent and drain caps before autoclaving
  • Loosen vent and drain caps before autoclaving
  • Keep both the inlet and outlet open to allow proper air removal and condensate drainage 
  • Position the capsule vertically whenever possible, with the flow arrow pointing downward  
  • Use a slow exhaust cycle and avoid temperatures above 125° C  

Recommended sterilization conditions:  

  • 30 minutes at 121° C (vacuum cycle)  
  • 60 minutes at 121 C (non-vacuum cycle)   

TIP: Capsule collapse is the most common mistake that occurs during cooling. If the capsule ports are sealed while cooling, condensing steam creates a vacuum that can deform the capsule housing. Keep the inlet, outlet, and vent/drain open throughout the cooling process.

Chemical Sanitization 

When chemical sanitization is appropriate, compatible agents include: 

  • Hydrogen peroxide/peracetic acid (1:100)  
  • 10% hydrogen peroxide  
  • Sodium hypochlorite (500–600 ppm free chlorine), except for nylon membrane filters  
  • Glutaraldehyde (up to 3.4%)  

Chemical compatibility varies by membrane material, housing material, concentration, exposure time, and temperature. Confirm compatibility with the specific capsule filter before selecting a sanitizer. 

After sanitization, thoroughly rinse the system with sterile water and verify that no sanitizer residue remains before returning the filter to service. 

Validate Your Procedure 

As filters become fouled, sanitizing chemicals may lose effectiveness because contaminants consume the active disinfectant. Periodic validation and monitoring help ensure that your cleaning procedure continues to deliver effective sanitization.  

Protecting Capsule Filter Integrity 

Proper capsule filter care goes beyond simply running an autoclave cycle. Correct orientation, proper venting during cooling, compatible cleaning chemicals, and validated sanitization procedures all contribute to maintaining filter integrity and maximizing service life. 

These practices can support reliable filtration and help maintain filter integrity, but they cannot reverse membrane fouling or restore flow to a clogged filter. Replace the capsule when flow or pressure no longer remains within the validated operating range.
