Sterlitech is introducing flat sheet membranes from Fluid Technology Solutions to expand our line of Forward Osmosis membrane products. The FTSH2Oâ„¢ flat sheet membranes are constructed from low-fouling cellulose triacetate (CTA) material. They also present the benefit of being able to backwash to restore membrane performance.
FTSH2Oâ„¢ FO membranes are ideal for applications where the feed stream contains high levels of suspended solids or high salinity. Use of FO membranes enables the treatment of these feed streams using osmotic pressure, therefore eliminating the need for the extensive pre-treatment and high hydraulic pressures involved in pressure-driven treatment processes. This results in both lower capital and operating expenditure for the filtration system.
These new membrane additions are available in large sheet format, as well as in precut coupons for use in the Sepa, CF042 and CF016 Forward Osmosis filtration cells.

As part of our goal to enable researchers, Sterlitech carries a comprehensive assortment of membranes for use in bench-scale filtration systems (such as our HP4750, CF016, CF042, and Sepa CF cells). We offer membrane filter sheets designed for use in reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, microfiltration, and forward osmosis applications. Additionally, we offer membranes for membrane distillation and where this is a need for chemically resistant membranes.

Sterlitech is launching new flat sheet membranes from Synder Filtration to expand our line of ultrafiltration products. The MQ and MQ MAX models are polyethersulfone (PES)-based membranes designed for ultrafiltration separations in the food & dairy industry. Beverage clarification and specialty protein separation are two common applications for this membrane line.
Both new models offer robust pH and temperature tolerance along with high resistance to fouling. They also exhibit similar permeate flux and separate proteins at 50 kDa MWCO. The MQ is supported by a polyester backing layer, while the MQ MAX has a polyester support. The MQ MAX has extended pH tolerance for increased resistance.

Water molecules are ubiquitous, vital, and may have the world’s most well-known chemical formula (H₂O). The properties of water are quite unique; its solid state is less dense than its liquid state, raising pressure lowers its melting point, and it exists as a liquid at room temperature despite low molecular mass. Even more unique is the water molecule’s ability to exist as two distinct nuclear configurations called spin isomers.
The two spin isomers of water molecules differ based on the direction of the nuclear spin of the two hydrogen nuclei. If the two hydrogen nuclei have parallel spins, the molecule is known as ortho-water. If the two hydrogen nuclei have opposite spins, the molecule is known as para-water. Water at room temperature always contains a mix of these two spin isomers and, until recently, it has been nearly impossible to study them separately.

The National Association of Scientific Materials Managers (NAOSMM) will be holding its 45th Annual Conference and Trade Show , July 22-27th in Spokane, Washington - just over the mountains from Sterlitech. We are excited to participate in this trade show for the 5th consecutive year and hope to meet with attendees at our booth, #22! We’re also looking forward to co-sponsoring the Tuesday Evening Out event at the show, as part of the Independent Laboratory Distributors Association (ILDA).
This conference provides an opportunity for its over 500 members in the scientific industry to discuss current trends and issues, participate in seminars and workshops, and preview new products from vendors. A recent study from the World Health Organization (WHO) found that 9 of 10 people live in environments that expose them daily to elevated levels of air pollution.1 This contributes to staggering 7 million deaths a year from related diseases.1The danger is largely posed by fine particles less than 10 (PM10) and 2.5 (PM2.5) micrometers which may pass through the nose and extend beyond the heart and lungs to the brain and cause health problems; these can also affect the environment.1 US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 201A is commonly used to monitor PM10, and PM2.5 for air quality control. Air is withdrawn through two sizing cyclones, and then collected on an EPA approved PTFE membrane filter. After a sample is obtained, gravimetric analysis is used to determine the particulate mass for each size fraction. The PM2.5 mass is determined by adding the mass of particulates captured on the PTFE filter and the ≤ 2.5 μm wash.2,3

Sterlitech offers a broad variety of polyamide active layer thin film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) flat sheet membranes. It is quite common for these membranes to have visually apparent surface imperfections, most notably small dark spots, resulting from the manufacturing process. Some inexperienced users may be concerned that these spots are mold or some other contamination, however, these are almost always the result of trace residual amounts of polyamide monomer that have reacted to ambient light. While not visually appealing, you can rest assured that these spots are not a source of contamination and do not affect membrane performance. Users should resist the urge to clean these spots as rubbing the membrane surface will cause damage.
Other types of common surface imperfections are light areas or spots that become visually apparent when observing membranes with strong transmitted light. These imperfections are inherent to TFC membranes

In September 2017, SUEZ Water Technologies and Solutions acquired GE Water Division. As a result, starting this July, we will follow the branding transition putting in place by the manufacturer and will update GE membranes branding and packaging to SUEZ branding. This transition will not affect the product quality or the specifications, it will be only a branding transition. We will clearly mark the changes on our website and the product packaging to make sure there won’t be any confusion on our customer side. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Sterlitech now offers our full range of microfiltration and ultrafiltration flat sheet membranes cut in disk sizes compatible with our polymeric stirred cells. These include membranes from SUEZ (GE Osmonics), Synder Filtration, and Microdyn Nadir. These discs are available in 25, 43, 62, 76, 90, and 150 mm diameters.
Disk filters in combination with the low-pressure polymeric stirred cells can be used as a fast and easy method for a wide variety of filtration/separation applications, such as performing filtration of fluids with heavy particle loads or concentrating biological components and macrosolutes (DNA, RNA, protein, etc.). Â Other examples of applications for low-pressure filtration include cell harvesting, diafiltration, lysate clarification, and suspended solids removal. Additionally, mechanical stirring mechanism minimizes concentration polarization and membrane fouling while operating at high permeate flow rates and recovery.Â
