Organic Solvent Nanofiltration Membranes

Organic Solvent Nanofiltration (OSN) is a method that uses multiple filtration steps to purify and concentrate cannabis extracts. With this method, batches of crude ethanol extract are filtered using a nanofiltration membrane with pores that prevent large molecules from passing through. The end result is decolorized, concentrated extract in fewer steps than conventional ethanol extraction. By investing in OSN, processors can greatly simplify the cannabis extraction process, ultimately saving time and money.

Nanofiltration can concentrate and remove color (chlorophyll) from extracts in one step. OSN is recommended after initial extraction, and can be repeated as needed during concentration/purification. Solvent removed in filtration steps can be recycled back for future extractions.

Nanofiltration membranes are designated as Flat Sheet Membranes, meaning they are typically operated using cross or tangential flow. A Stirred Cell or one of our bench-scale Cross/Tangential Flow Test Cells are suitable for conducting OSN. Please Contact Us with any questions on how to assemble a system for running OSN.
