Piston Pump: 
A connecting rod with a compression ring rises and falls in the cylinder, on the down-stroke it draws the air through the inlet valve; On the up-stroke it forces the air through the exhaust valve and out of the head.

Diaphragm Pump:
An elastomer diaphragm moving up and down.. On the down-stroke it draws the air through the inlet valve. On the up-stroke the diaphragm forces the air through the exhaust valve and out of the head
