Dust Analysis by X-Ray Diffraction Improved with Silver Metal Filter
Kent, WA (July 7, 2003) Sterlitech silver metal filters have proven exceptional for a wide range of dust analyses, particularly those involving asbestos and quartz particles. Quantitative determination of crystalline materials is possible, even with small sample sizes, using thin dust layers deposited on silver membranes.
X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis is considered the superior analytical tool for determination of asbestos and quartz minerals by such groups as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (U.S.), the National Institute of Occupational Health ( Norway ), and the Instituto Superiore di Sanita ( Italy ), among others.
Silver metal membrane filters make excellent substrates for XRD because they have low background noise and distinct silver diffraction peaks at high 2ø angles (38º and 44º), thereby minimizing interference with sample diffraction patterns. Also, sample absorption can be determined by measuring the known difference in silver diffraction peak intensities. Silver membranes have a uniform structure and porosity which yield consistent, evenly distributed filtration products.
Silver metal membranes are available in micron ratings of 0.2, 0.45, 0.8, 1.2, 3.0, and 5.0 with standard diameters ranging from 13 mm to 47mm.
