  3. Membrane chemical cleaning: why is it required and how is it performed?

Membrane chemical cleaning: why is it required and how is it performed?

Membrane fouling, defined as the accumulation of particles and organic matter at the surface or in the pores of membranes occurs during membrane filtration. Membrane fouling results in membrane performance loss, i.e. lower rejection values, lower permeate flux and higher pressure drop, which translates into higher operational cost. The extent of fouling depends on the feed quality, operating conditions, membrane characteristics and module design.

Membrane fouling can be divided into three types: hydraulically reversible, chemically reversible and irreversible fouling. Hydraulically reversible fouling can be removed physically (e.g. by introducing turbulence at the proximity of a membrane surface) or through backwashing of membranes. On the other hand, chemically reversible fouling can only be removed by chemical cleaning methods, while irreversible fouling is permanent.

Sterlitech goes on the Road in 2017!

Next month, Sterlitech Corporation will be exhibiting our filtration products at Seattle CannaCon. CannaCon is the premier trade show in the Pacific Northwest for all industry-related operations for the emerging cannabis market. Sterlitech has added numerous new products aimed at making the workday easier for every sized operation of growers, processors/extractors, and QC test labs and this is our first time exhibiting at Cannacon. If you’re going to the Seattle show February 16-18, stop by Booth #754 to say hi to the reps, take a look at our filter/extraction/test supplies, and to enter to win a botanical extract filter kit! Visitors to our booth will also receive a discount code for their next online order for one of several different botanical extract p

  5. Filtering HPLC solutions or other solvent-based liquids for the lab?

Filtering HPLC solutions or other solvent-based liquids for the lab?

Sterlitech is proud to launch a new product based on the successes of the Autofil bottle-top disposable filter funnel, now in a solvent-resistant version.

The Autofil PP bottle-top filters are a revolutionary new way to purify solvents for analytical applications or purify buffers and extracts. These new devices are the world’s first single-piece polypropylene funnel, designed to withstand harsh solvents that would normally degrade traditional polystyrene bottle-top filter assemblies. All active components are FDA-grade, which makes Autofil PP perfect for extracting compounds used in the food and drug industry. Autofil PP is designed to conveniently fit on top of most laboratory bottles with a GL45 thread, and works seamlessly with the same no-spill cradle system that made the

  6. Launching Aquapad aboard the International Space Station (ISS)

Launching Aquapad aboard the International Space Station (ISS)

Did you know that the potable water on board the International Space Station (ISS) is up to 80% recycled from astronauts’ sweat, urine and other reclaimed wastewater sources?

This means bacteria testing to monitor the quality of the recycled water is frequently required to ensure astronauts’ health and safety of consumption. Traditional test methods for bacteria testing can be timely, and complex, however a new approach currently being evaluated by European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut, Thomas Pesquet, aims to improve the speed and efficiency of these tests on board the ISS.

His experiment involves depositing a water sample onto Aquapad, developed by bioMérieux. Aquapad consists of a paper pad impregnated with powdered growth medium to create a 3D petri dish, on which the microbes are revealed in the form of countable, colored spots; a simple calculation determines whether the water is safe to drink. Traditional bacteria counting methods typically utilize
